Mas is all about immersing yourself in the music, embracing both freedom and tradition, and wearing costumes that dazzle the senses. When the event began at South London’s Sugar Cane Bar, social media influencers, photographers, journalists, bajans and aspiring masqueraders were greeted by this vibrant spectacle.

If you want to play mas, then the process is simple: select a mas band as each offers unique vibes and costume designs. This weekend saw the launch of a Bajan-inspired mas’ band, MASQ by Naitram. “Unleash” will work alongside ABIR Mas, a well-known UK mas band with 18 years of experience.
As this partnership develops, the collaboration seeks to merge Caribbean heritage with modern creative flair throughout Carnival weekend. Their main goal is to honour tradition, growth, and community through colourful costumes, lively music, and engaging storytelling.
ABIR will present “Celebration Time… Celebrating The Legacy” Dutty Mas on Sunday, at Notting Hill carnival, highlighting Caribbean customs, resilience, and community spirit with paint, powder, music, and vibrant energy.

Whilst this evening focused on UNLEASH costumes, which were breathtaking to say the least, three sections were on display, designed by experienced Barbadian Designer Kadim Hinds, whose resume includes Blue Box Cart. Hinds flew in for the weekend as he needs to be back in Bim for another band launch for Cropover 26
“It didn’t take more than two weeks to design the costumes after the band presented the theme,” Kadim explained, highlighting the quick timeline between his involvement in London and his upcoming commitments in Barbados. His subtle, visual Bajan theme, using the national colours and the golden trident, is a testament to his creativity.

His style integrates traditional heritage with modern visuals. The overarching philosophy, “Legacy in Motion,” emphasises the continual evolution and cultural importance of Carnival.
This emphasis on Barbadian identity marks a significant development in Notting Hill Carnival. Many Bajans and friends would love to identify with Barbados, and since the demise of the Bajan Revellers in London Carnival, Barbadian groups have been reduced to sections in bands such as Chocolate Mas, Credible, “Release the Rhythm”, and Bajan Raw Liquor Rum Shop Max; now Unleash has been added to the list.
Band leader Danny Lewis, who hails from the parish of St Peter, reiterated that MasQ Is A Caribbean mas, with costumes inspired by his Bajan heritage. A veteran masquerader himself, he donned a costume on the night, even though he was coordinating the event.

The band draws its thematic inspiration from ancestral figures, such as Anansi, who embodies intellect and creativity. Mama D’lo, symbolising water and movement; siren of Atlantis. a captivating force of water, beauty, and motion. This look embodies the energy, rhythm and movement that bring mas to life on the road, and Mama Sally embodies strength and collective joy.

“From a cultural perspective, the collaboration commemorates the 60-year legacy of Notting Hill Carnival by highlighting its heritage, continuous innovation, and strong sense of community. It acknowledges Carnival as an environment that fosters freedom, identity, vitality, and cultural expression, motivating individuals to express themselves. Through the integration of tradition with contemporary elements and a commitment to authentic experiences, this partnership pays tribute to the resilience and vibrancy inherent in Caribbean culture.” Darren explained.

Watch out, Notting Hill, something new has been unleashed.
