DESCRIPTION:On 1 August 1834\, which is now known as Emancipation Day in many places\, slavery was abolished in Britain’s colonies through the Slavery Abolition Act. Since the sixteenth century\, Britain had forced at least twelve million Africans onto ships bound for the Americas. Many died during the journey\, and those who survived were enslaved on plantations that produced sugar\, cotton\, and tobacco. \nBritain played a key role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Cities like Bristol\, London\, and Liverpool became major ports for slave ships. The money made from this trade helped build industries and made banks\, politicians\, and even the royal family wealthier. \nBritain stopped the slave trade in 1807\, but slavery itself continued in the Empire for another 25 years. While abolition is often celebrated\, many formerly enslaved people were forced into low-paid jobs or unpaid ‘apprenticeships.’ In 1834\, the government paid slave owners £20 million\, which would be about £17 billion today. UK taxpayers were still paying off this debt as recently as 2015. \nEmancipation Day is not an official holiday in the UK\, but it has led to more people calling for Britain to acknowledge its role in slavery and imperial oppression in Africa\, Asia\, the Americas\, and Australasia. Some leaders\, like Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley and public figures in Jamaica\, have called for reparations from former colonies. With events like the Windrush scandal and the Black Lives Matter movement\, it is important to look closely at the history and legacy of the British Empire. \nThe service at St Stephen’s Church in Thornton Heath is organized by the Barbados Overseas Community and Friends Association together with the National Council of Barbadian Associations UK. Barbadian born Bishop Rosemarie Mallet\, the Acting Diocesan Bishop of Southwark\, will give the sermon\, and guest artists will perform music. Father David Hoyte\, who is both an organist and a priest\, will also join in this important community event.
