BOCFA: Black individuals often face limited access to healthcare, including autism services. Cultural misunderstandings significantly affect service provision, stemming from providers’ lack of cultural awareness, difficulties in building rapport, differing views on autism, and language barriers. Families may see professionals’ behaviors as culturally insensitive and feel judged, which can discourage them from seeking services. Furthermore, their ability to advocate for themselves is often hindered by a lack of knowledge about rights and available services, along with communication gaps with professionals.
